Leiko Ikemura
Awakening (Edition)
Born in Japan in 1951, Leiko Ikemura is one of the most important painters and sculptors of our time. Her work revolves around the delicate and often magical connection between humans, animals, and nature. Shimmering landscapes are populated by hybrid figures – part girl, part rabbit – that inhabit an intermediate world where the boundaries between identity and reality become blurred. Her paintings and sculptures blend echoes of Japanese spirituality with Western artistic tradition, evoking femininity, vulnerability, and a sense of cosmic interconnectedness through fragile, almost ghostly images.
Ikemura lives in Berlin and has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts. Her work is held in major international collections and exhibited in museums worldwide

The glass objects created for this edition in the artist’s studio unfold a dreamlike and poetic imagery. In delicate shades of yellow, pink, violet and blue, they oscillate between figuration and abstraction, tying in with the artist’s central motif: the chimera — a mythical hybrid creature combining human and animal features. Each sculpture bears traces of incompleteness and ambiguity, seeming to exist in a state of limbo between becoming and being. Their shiny surfaces subtly refract light, making them appear to glow from within.
