Stephan Balkenhol – Frau und Mann

Created by Stephan Balkenhol for this edition, the sculptures ‘Woman’ and ‘Man’ offer collectors the opportunity to acquire a pair of iconic contemporary artworks. Balkenhol’s anonymous figures, carved from logs with a chisel or cast in bronze and painted, do not tell stories. Nevertheless, they serve as a projection surface for human existence and, for this very reason, evoke emotion. Each sculpture was created using the classic bronze casting process and underwent numerous production stages and finishing processes before being given its characteristic paint finish by Balkenhol himself, thus becoming a unique work of art.

Born in Fritzlar in 1957, Stephan Balkenhol is one of the leading artists in contemporary figurative sculpture and one of the most important sculptors internationally. Thanks to four decades of exhibitions in leading museums worldwide and his high visibility in public spaces, his works seem omnipresent. His numerous exhibitions in Switzerland began in the 1980s with a tribute at the Kunstmuseum Basel. From the early 1990s onwards, he held a professorship in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Balkenhol’s monumental bronze sculptures can be seen in cities such as Berlin, Chicago, Johannesburg, London, Salzburg and Paris.
