Sean Scully – Untitled 2025

In his iPhone Drawings, Sean Scully combines traditional abstraction and digital imagery. The compositions he creates on his smartphone reflect his distinctive formal language, featuring powerful grid structures, rectangular blocks of colour, and lines that correspond to his large-format paintings and prints. Digital technology lends the works a luminous colour effect, which is sometimes reminiscent of neon. The works were most recently exhibited in the Uninsideout exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery, alongside his Landline graphics.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Sean Scully is widely regarded as one of the most important non-representational artists of our time, with retrospectives held at prestigious venues around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Scully’s paintings are characterised by distinctive colour compositions that appear both monumental and intimate. Imbued with spiritual depth, his works testify to the transition of abstract painting into an emotional realm.
