Thomas Schütte
Thomas Schütte, born in 1954, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter from 1973 to 1981. Important museum exhibitions in recent years have included those at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel. In 2005, Thomas Schütte was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist for his presentation at the Venice Biennale. His works are represented in important collections and museums worldwide.
In the early 1990s, Thomas Schütte began creating a series of heads out of Fimo modelling clay, exaggerating the physiognomic characteristics of the characters. With these works, entitled United Enemies, he laid the foundation for one of his central groups of works. Based on this, he created the series Skatbrüder for PArt Editions, four distinct bronze sculptures. The eccentric grimaces make it easy to identify the cheater, the unlucky player or the lucky player in this game. What is certain is that these four sculptures reveal key figures from his work over the last three decades in a new light.
