Christian Megert – Mein Blick auf die Schweiz
Born in Bern in 1936, Christian Megert is one of the most internationally renowned representatives of kinetic art and has been a member of the ZERO movement since 1960. Following training at the Bern School of Art and Design, and studies in Northern Europe, Berlin and Paris, he began developing his signature mirrored sculptures in the early 1960s. These redefine the relationship between space, light and movement. In 1961, he set out his artistic vision of infinite spatial perception in his manifesto Ein Neuer Raum (A New Space). He participated in documenta IV and exhibited at museums such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He also influenced generations of artists as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1976 to 2002. His works combine formal rigour with a subtle and often poetic expansion of perception.
‘I already have an idea’ – these were the words that marked the beginning of Christian Megert’s artistic exploration of the Swiss flag. For this internationally renowned kinetic artist and ZERO movement member since 1960, the flag is much more than just a graphic form; it represents history, identity and emotional connection. In his mirror objects, Megert combines ZERO’s strict aesthetic principles of clarity, directness and harsh contrasts with an unexpected empathy, creating space for new perspectives on home and belonging. The result is a series of works that are formally consistent yet deeply personal in their reflection: Switzerland as I see it.
All works of this PArt edition by Christian Megert are executed in mirror, wood, cardboard, and paint within an object frame, each measuring 400 × 300 × 50 mm. Every work is a unique piece, signed and numbered on the reverse.

‘The fragmentation is presented differently in relief than on the two-dimensional flag. The ‘fragments’ differ in size, materiality, colour, position, just as the Valaisan is different from the Bernese and the Fribourg is different from the Zurich.’ Christian Megert
‘My mirror constructions are intended to point to a new dimension, the question of where does it go on and where does it end always remains open. The viewer becomes part of the artwork and experiences a new perspective on their surroundings through these reflections.’ Christian Megert
