Felix Rehfeld
Lackreliefs
In his series, ‘Lackreliefs’ (Lacquer Reliefs), Rehfeld translates these themes into a body of work that lies somewhere between painting and sculpture. He starts with relief-shaped chipboard panels, which he paints in monochrome. He captures the reflections of his studio in the reflective surface of these coloured areas using a camera, and then interprets them in a painterly way. The result is pieces in which colour, space, and reflection merge to form a coherent whole. Each piece measures 36 × 27 × 4 cm, comes in one of thirteen colours, and is limited to four copies. Stamped, numbered and hand-signed by the artist on the back, the ‘Lacquer Reliefs’ not only exemplify Rehfeld’s conceptual approach, but also establish a fascinating link between his previous series of paintings and the sculptural, almost haptic dimension of art.

Felix Rehfeld (born Hadamar, 1981) is one of the most exciting voices of a young generation of artists who consistently question and expand the boundaries of painting. Initially trained as a carpenter, he later became a master student of Karin Kneffel at the art academies in Bremen and Munich. He repeatedly explores the relationship between reality and image, and between painting and photography, in his work. His works are characterised by precise craftsmanship, subtle colour composition, and the deliberate visibility of the artistic process.
