Penny Monogiou
Die starken Frauen des Augustus
In her series of works, Penny Monogiou focuses on some of the most powerful women of the Julio-Claudian dynasty: Agrippina Minor, Agrippina Major, Julia and Livia – the mothers, grandmothers and ancestors of Emperor Nero. Using bright colours, Cypriot-inspired stitching and a warm, lively visual language, Monogiou breaks down the cool austerity of ancient marble busts and restores humanity to these mythical figures. The result is an homage that artfully interweaves history, legend, and the present. The series comprises fifteen double portraits in an 18 × 24 cm format. Painted in oil on canvas, they are also available as individual works.
