Ugo Rondinone – Mountains

Ugo Rondinone was born in Brunnen, Switzerland, in 1964 and is considered one of the most important voices of his generation. An artist who composes haunting meditations on nature and the human condition, while developing an organic formal vocabulary that unites a variety of sculptural and painterly traditions. The artist has lived in New York since 1997. In the 1990s, Rondinone received the Swiss Federal Prize for Fine Arts several times. In 2007, Rondinone represented Switzerland at the 52nd Venice Biennale. His hybrid forms, which draw on both ancient and modern cultural sources, radiate pathos and humour in equal measure and strike at the heart of the most pressing questions of our time, where modern achievements and archaic forms of expression intersect.

With ,Mountains‘, Ugo Rondinone has created a series of 27 of his iconic mountain sculptures for PArt Editions, which are among his best-known works. They combine the appearance of geological formations and abstract compositions, consisting of vertically stacked groups of two stone blocks. They began with a monumental work in the Nevada desert in 2016. Since then, a number of these works have been created in public spaces around the world, as well as smaller works for indoor spaces. With them, Rondinone ties in with the Land Art movement of the 1960s and expands it with decisive contemporary influences from Pop Art and comic culture. Each stone is painted in a different Day-Glo colour. The resulting stone towers are reminiscent of the centuries-old tradition of meditative stone stacking.
