Thorsten Brinkmann

Se king – director’s shot

In an opulent, ironically exaggerated pose of authority, Thorsten Brinkmann presents himself as a ‘king’ — or rather, a parody of one. Fifty large-format Polaroids were taken on an improvised stage made of carpets, curtains and found objects from his studio at the Supersense studio in Vienna, using the last colour film from this rare 24×20-inch camera. Each photograph is unique, characterised by spontaneous exposure errors, colour shifts and flowing image edges — embracing chance as an artistic accomplice. The entire series is numbered, stamped and signed by the artist on the back.

Brinkmann (born in Herne in 1971) is a German conceptual artist and photographer renowned for his idiosyncratic self-portraits. He combines found objects, everyday items and clothing to create bizarre and often humorous arrangements in which he portrays himself as an anonymous figure. Brinkmann studied at the Münster Art Academy and the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, and his work has been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries including the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His work ranges from photography to object art and installation, playfully questioning the conventions of portraiture and representation.
